Fair Trade At Home: Inside The Grist Mill Cabin

Imagine a home where every detail does good, where the decor doesn’t just look beautiful but supports people and the planet, too. This is the heart of fair trade at home. It might look different for everyone, from a few meaningful pieces, to an entire space built around purpose and creativity, but every version does good.

We recently had the joy of experiencing a beautiful example of fair trade at home when we visited Joan at her property: The Grist Mill Cabin. The cabin has a special place in her heart as she took it on before it even had running water. It's where she raised her daughter and where she now welcomes guests for a quiet and beautiful countryside getaway.

Just an hour outside Staunton, in Quicksburg, VA, this former sawmill is now an open concept cabin that offers a hidden getaway. The beauty begins before you even arrive as you pass through scenic small towns and over rolling hills to reach this beautiful retreat.

Inside you’ll experience the history of the building, the eclectic style and creativity of the owner Joan, and fair trade treasures all around. Grist Mill Cabin is a great example of mixing styles without sacrificing values.

Every detail is thought out and intentional, driven by Joan’s goal of supporting small, unique businesses and repurposing whatever she can. Her transformations include a vintage timeclock turned lamp and many parts from the original building being used for anything from flooring to countertops and side tables.

We adored seeing Latitudes brass charms from Kenya being used as fan pulls for the ceiling fans. A variety of our felt garlands, from colorful balls to bright sunflowers, add fair trade flair and color to the space.

We also had the opportunity to style the cabin with a few extra pieces, like children’s toys that fit perfectly into the kids’ cozy sleep area.

When you head out to the porch and wooded backyard, experience Holman’s Creek that winds through the property. Relax by the water in ethically made hammock chairs and listen as Capiz chimes from Bali dance in the wind.

Joan raised her daughter in this space and transformed it from an old, forgotten landmark, to a bright, welcoming home full of love and character. The building’s history, and Joan’s own, run deep here and it’s clearly a huge part of the cabin’s charm. We're so happy to see fair trade at home in such a warm, welcoming place!
