What Is Screen Printing?

What Is Screen Printing?

Screen printing is a traditional art form that surrounds us daily on clothing, bags, stationery, dishware, and more. The process of screen printing requires practiced skill as paint is forced through a mesh screen to form a design.

The Process

There are multiple methods for creating a screen; however, each method involves ensuring that only the design area allows paint to pass, and the rest of the screen is covered. Once the screen is ready, it is placed over the desired object, a layer of paint is applied, and the paint is then squeegeed across the screen, leaving the design on the object.

If multiple colors are needed in a design, the process must be repeated with each color. Intricate designs may even use multiple screens. The result is a crisp image that, once set, will last for years to come.

The Possibilities

Screen printing has many uses and can be put on many surfaces, providing artisans with endless opportunities with a single skill set. The variety of screen printing is incredible. Even within what's offered at Latitudes Fair Trade, you can witness the range.

These napkin sets, totes, shorts, and tops are just a few options, yet they show the diversity of colors and patterns that derive from this art form. What started during the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279) in China is now a popular method worldwide.

You may start to notice just how popular it is as you look through your home and places you frequent. Ready for a little more screen print? Check out all available designs at Latitudes Fair Trade now.
