Most teas–even those that are certified as fair trade–come from large plantations where workers have little say and are trapped in a system of dependency. The small farmers who grow Equal Exchange teas control their land and their livelihoods. Together, they're building an alternative tea model and a farmer-led future for the tea industry.
Equal Exchange is proud to support the Small Organic Farmers' Association (SOFA) in Sri Lanka who grow a variety of crops including tea, black pepper, cloves and ginger. Unlike the typical monoculture model of tea production, SOFA’s crop diversification provides both economic and environmental resilience at the farm level and supports their vision to establish a prosperous community living in harmony with the environment.
